Boat Race Traditional of Phichit Province is a grand merit-making and cultural event cherished by the people of Phichit. Held every year from September to August in front of Wat Wang Klom, Ban Bung Subdistrict, the festival is filled with excitement and lively atmosphere. Locals and tourists from various regions gather to witness the races, which are not only thrilling water sports but also rituals reflecting the community’s deep connection with the river and their long-standing devotion to Buddhism.

The history of the Boat Race Traditional in Phichit dates back several centuries to the Ayutthaya period. Originally, the races were held as a Buddhist offering during the end-of-Rainy-Season festival (Ok Phansa) and as a way to pay respect to the rivers that sustain the community. After the rice harvest, when the rivers were full, villagers would come together to race their boats for fun and unity. It was also believed that a smooth and successful race would bring prosperity, abundant rainfall, and a good harvest for the year.

The boats used in the races are made of hard wood, long and slender, requiring skilled craftsmen to carve and decorate them beautifully. Ban Bung Subdistrict is particularly renowned for its longboat craftsmanship, especially the “Sorn Thong” boat, which has won numerous championships and become a symbol of pride and honor for the community.

Beyond the fierce competition, the event features a variety of festivities and entertainment, including traditional performances, music, local games, and a market showcasing Phichit’s local delicacies. Visitors can enjoy unique regional dishes that are hard to find elsewhere, such as spicy snail curry, noodle dishes served in a hanging bowl style, and a variety of traditional Thai desserts unique to this merit-making festival.

Adding to the festival’s charm are the local stories and legends surrounding the boats. Villagers believe that each boat is inhabited by a spirit or “Nang Ruea” (boat spirit), and rituals are performed to pay respects and seek blessings for protection and success. These ceremonies reflect the fusion of traditional beliefs with Buddhist devotion and respect for nature. Moreover, the races symbolize community unity; if the rowers are not synchronized, the boat cannot move forward steadily, much like the way people rely on cooperation to maintain a harmonious life.

The race day is filled with the resounding beats of boat drums, cheers from both riverbanks, and the sight of rowers paddling in perfect harmony. This creates an exhilarating and unforgettable experience for spectators. Visitors gain not only thrilling entertainment but also a deeper understanding of the history, culture, beliefs, and stories that give this tradition profound meaning.

The Boat Race Traditional of Phichit Province is thus more than just a water sport. It is a merit-making, cultural, and festive event that unites people, preserves valuable heritage, and serves as a distinctive feature that attracts visitors wishing to experience the beauty and significance of Thai traditions.
