Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit is located only about 7 kilometers from the city center and is considered one of the most valuable historical attractions in Phichit Province. It is believed to be the site of the ancient Phichit city, founded during the reign of Phaya Kot Bong around 1058 AD, covering more than 400 rai. Within the grounds, visitors can still witness traces of its glorious past, including city walls, moats, and old pagoda ruins, reflecting its significance as a once-thriving community. Besides its archaeological importance, the park also features the Kancha Nok Kumarn Arboretum, established by the Royal Forest Department in 1977, creating a lush and shaded environment filled with various tree species, making it a perfect place for relaxation.

Several attractions within Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit are worth exploring. The City Pillar Shrine, built in 1977, consists of two levels: the upper level houses the city pillar, while the lower level enshrines a statue of Phaya Kot Bong, whom locals respectfully call “Pho Pu,” a revered guardian spirit of the city. Another remarkable landmark is Wat Mahathat, an ancient brick-built temple located at the center of the old city on the eastern bank of the old Nan River. This temple was officially registered as a historical monument in 1935. Its Lanka-style chedi once enshrined numerous sacred Buddha amulets and relics, many of which were looted in the past. In front of the chedi once stood a nine-room viharn, while behind it was the ubosot (ordination hall) surrounded by two layers of boundary stones. Over time, however, large tree roots and structural collapse left only the brick foundations. Excavations carried out by the Fine Arts Department in 1991 uncovered evidence of constructions from both the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya periods, along with satellite stupas and remnants of massive city walls.

Another highlight is the Chalawan Cave, renowned in Thai literature through Krai Thong, a royal composition by King Rama II. The cave extends deep underground, and legend tells that about 65 years ago, a monk from Wat Nakhon Chum once lit a candle and walked inside; even after the candle burned out, he had not reached the end, enhancing the cave’s mysterious allure. Today, soil erosion has filled much of the cave, but statues of Krai Thong and Chalawan the crocodile have been erected at the cave’s entrance, symbolizing its literary significance. Also noteworthy is Sri Mala Island, a mound resembling a small island located in the outer moat beyond the ancient city walls. Surrounded by shallow moats, it is believed to have served as a fort or watchtower in the past, due to its strategic position outside the city.

Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit is not only a historical learning site but also a peaceful retreat where nature and ancient ruins coexist in harmony. Visitors can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of an ancient city while reflecting on Phichit’s glorious past. Traveling to the site is convenient via the Phichit–Sam Ngam–Wang Chik Road, following Highway 115 and Highway 1068, near the 6-kilometer marker. For those with an interest in history, literature, and ancient culture, Utthayan Mueang Kao Pichit is a destination that should not be missed, as it perfectly combines cultural heritage with natural beauty.
