Pha Tang Waterfall is a natural waterfall in Phrao District, Chiang Mai, ideal for travelers who enjoy swimming and relaxing in a forest setting that still feels genuinely local. The waterfall is formed by Huai Mae Saruam Stream and features one main cascade, approximately 20 meters high. Upstream, there are two smaller waterfalls along the same stream, which means the experience here is not limited to viewing a single drop but extends to exploring pools, rocks, and resting spots along the watercourse.

The main charm of Pha Tang Waterfall lies in its large rock formations and natural rapids. Along the stream, massive boulders create small islands, shallow pools, and gentle cascades at different levels. Some sections are perfect for soaking your feet, while others invite light swimming. On quieter days, the atmosphere feels deeply connected to the forest rather than like a quick photo stop.

The waterfall is especially impressive during the rainy season, when the water volume increases significantly and the stream looks energetic and alive. However, this also means slippery rocks and the possibility of sudden water rise after heavy rain. During the cool season, the weather is comfortable and the area often feels calmer, making it ideal for slow walks and longer breaks. In the hot season, it is well suited for cooling off in the water, but visiting in the morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid strong midday heat and to allow enough daylight for the return drive.

Swimming here can be enjoyable for a long stretch of the stream, but safety should come first. Always choose shallow pools with gentle flow, avoid fast-moving sections or whirlpools, and be cautious around algae-covered rocks, which are extremely slippery. If visiting with children or elderly companions, define a clear play area and keep everyone within sight. Useful items to bring include non-slip footwear or water shoes, a towel, a change of clothes, insect repellent, drinking water, and a dry bag for valuables.

Responsible travel matters here. Do not leave trash, do not throw food scraps into the stream, and do not use soap or shampoo in the water. Huai Mae Saruam is both a recreational area and a community water source. With a bit of care from visitors, the Ban Pang Fan waterfall route can remain naturally beautiful without needing to be overly commercialized.

Getting There From the Phrao District Office, take Highway 1150 (Phrao – Wiang Pa Pao) to the Ban Ton Kok intersection. Turn left and continue through Ban Ton Rung, Ban Thung Ku, and Ban Cooperative Plot 5. This section is a concrete road for about 4 km. After that, follow the dirt road toward Ban Pang Fan for approximately 8 km to reach Pha Tang Waterfall. Drive at a moderate speed and watch for potholes, especially during or after rain.

The trip becomes even more rewarding if planned as a simple “waterfall-hopping” route. The Ban Pang Fan line includes several waterfalls, allowing you to visit more than one spot in a single day. Many travelers combine Pha Tang Waterfall with nearby falls, then return to Phrao town for local food or a café break. Starting early helps ensure a relaxed pace and a safe return before dark.
