Wat Ban Den, officially known as Wat Ban Den Sahrisrimueang Gan, is one of the most important temples in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai Province. The temple is located in Inthakhin Subdistrict on a gentle hill, surrounded by lush rural landscapes and a naturally peaceful environment. Its slightly elevated position allows fresh air to circulate freely and offers open views of the surrounding countryside, creating a calm and spacious atmosphere that immediately sets it apart from urban temples.

 

The history of Wat Ban Den is closely connected to Kruba Tueang Natasilo, a highly respected monk who played a crucial role in the temple’s major restoration in 1894. Kruba Tueang believed that a temple should be more than a place for religious ceremonies; it should also be a beautiful and welcoming space that naturally guides people toward inner reflection and moral cultivation. As a result, the restoration of Wat Ban Den emphasized refined Lanna-style architecture, using visual beauty as a form of Dhamma to attract people and gently lead them closer to Buddhism.

 

The temple complex features numerous important structures, including the ordination hall, main viharn, scripture hall (Ho Trai), drum tower, Inthakhin pillar viharn, traditional golden teakwood monks’ residences, and a sacred stupa. Each building displays intricate Lanna craftsmanship and detailed wood carvings, reflecting the skills and wisdom of northern Thai artisans. The layout of the temple is spacious and well-balanced, allowing visitors to explore comfortably without feeling crowded.

 

Another key role of Wat Ban Den is its status as a place to pay respect to the Buddha relics representing all twelve zodiac years. This makes the temple an important spiritual destination for devotees from across the region, especially during major Buddhist holy days and festivals. Even during busy periods, the temple maintains a sense of order, cleanliness, and reverence, preserving its tranquil spiritual atmosphere.

 

Kruba Tueang’s vision of creating a “place of mental rest” continues to define Wat Ban Den today. Many visitors choose to stroll slowly through the temple grounds, sit quietly, or practice brief meditation sessions. Getting There – Wat Ban Den can be reached easily by car from Chiang Mai city, approximately 30 kilometers away. The route follows the same direction as Mae Ngat Somboon Chon Dam and lies along the Chiang Mai–Samoeng or Chiang Mai–Fang tourist routes. The drive is straightforward and suitable for a half-day or one-day trip combined with other attractions in Mae Taeng District.
