Wat Tham Suwan Phupha lies amid the tranquil forested hills of Khao Chamao District, Rayong Province. This Theravada temple of the Mahanikaya order is uniquely centered around a natural cave used for both meditation and worship. Inside, the blend of light, shadow, and the steady sound of dripping water creates a calm and sacred atmosphere. Spanning roughly 15 rai, the temple grounds are peaceful and welcoming to those who seek inner quiet or wish to explore the harmony between faith and nature.

The temple’s story began with the faith and generosity of local villagers who donated the land and worked together to transform the cave into a religious sanctuary. Official permission for construction was granted on June 10, 1993, and the temple was formally established on January 19, 1995. Over time, Wat Tham Suwan Phupha became a spiritual center for the community, hosting annual merit-making ceremonies such as the Kathina and other Buddhist festivals in an atmosphere of simplicity and serenity.

Within the cave, visitors can see sacred Buddha images—the main one in the Mara-subduing posture and another in a walking pose. The cave’s name, “Suwan Phupha,” meaning “Golden Mountain,” reflects the natural beauty of sunlight illuminating the rock walls in warm golden hues. During the morning, the rays penetrate through the cave opening, creating a gentle glow; by afternoon, soft shadows take over, enhancing the cave’s meditative stillness.

The temple is located near Khao Chamao–Khao Wong National Park, making it an ideal stop for travelers who appreciate both nature and culture. The park is home to the well-known Khao Chamao Waterfall and scenic forest trails that allow for a relaxed half-day visit combining spiritual calm and natural beauty. Visitors who enjoy photography should bring a tripod or headlamp for cave shots, and wear shoes with good grip as the cave floor can be slippery after rain.

Getting There From downtown Rayong, take Highway 3 (Sukhumvit Road) toward Klaeng, then follow Highway 3377 (Klaeng–Khao Chamao Road). Watch for signs to Khao Chamao District and the national park area. The total distance is about 70 kilometers, and the road is paved and suitable for all types of vehicles. For public transport, take a bus to Klaeng or Khao Chamao, then continue by local songthaew or motorbike taxi. Parking is available inside the temple compound.
