Wat Khao Bo Kwang Thong is located in Bo Kwang Thong Subdistrict, Bo Thong District, Chonburi Province. The temple grounds cover an area of 33 rai and 3 ngan, providing ample space for religious and community activities. Within the temple, there are various important structures, including the ordination hall (ubosot) used for significant Buddhist ceremonies, the sermon hall (sala kan parian) for meetings and Dhamma teachings, monks’ residences (kuti), a multipurpose pavilion for various community events, a pavilion for merit-making, and a bell tower used to mark times for activities at the temple.
The temple was officially established on October 14, 1977. Its founding began when Mr. Sanan Leesakul donated the land for its construction, and village headman Sawang Khun Chak played a key role in leading the local community to build the temple. The name “Khao Bo Kwang Thong” has its origin in the area’s natural landscape. The hill once had a pond and many deer footprints scattered around, so locals called it “Khao Bo Kwang Thong,” which roughly translates to “Golden Deer Pond Hill.” Later, when the temple was built, the same name was adopted to preserve the area’s history and local heritage.
On October 16, 1985, the temple received its official consecrated boundary (wisungkhamsima), which is a royal grant that legally establishes the temple as a proper place for important Buddhist ceremonies, such as ordination. This marked a significant milestone in the temple’s development and its role within the Buddhist monastic community.
Today, Wat Khao Bo Kwang Thong serves not only as a place for religious rituals but also as an important center for education. It has a Buddhist school that offers Dhamma studies to monks, novices, and local youth, ensuring that Buddhist teachings are preserved and passed down to future generations. This makes the temple a vital center for spreading Buddhism while also preserving Thai traditions and cultural values.
The temple, with its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful architecture, attracts both locals and visitors who come to make merit, meditate, and explore cultural tourism. It is not only a spiritual anchor for the community but also a destination where travelers can learn about local history and Buddhist culture. For those interested in cultural tourism, Wat Khao Bo Kwang Thong is a must-visit destination where one can worship sacred relics, experience the local way of life, and enjoy the serene surroundings filled with faith and devotion.
In addition, the temple hosts various religious events throughout the year, especially on significant Buddhist holy days such as Magha Puja, Visakha Puja, and the Buddhist Lent. These events bring together both locals and visitors, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose within the community. As a result, the temple plays a key role in maintaining harmony and preserving cultural heritage for future generations.
Getting to Wat Khao Bo Kwang Thong is convenient as it is not far from the main city area of Chonburi. Visitors can travel by private car or public transportation. Upon arrival, they can pay respect to sacred objects, experience the tranquil environment, and learn about the temple’s history and the local area. Wat Khao Bo Kwang Thong is thus both a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural landmark, perfect for those seeking peace, inspiration, and a deeper connection to Buddhist faith and Thai heritage.
