Wat Khao Chawang is a Buddhist temple under the Mahanikaya sect, located in Pong Nam Ron Subdistrict, Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province. Although the temple is relatively new compared to other historic temples in the region, it stands out with a remarkable identity and cultural significance. It was officially established on June 5, 2007, and later received the royal consecration of the boundary (Wisungkhamsima) on June 20, 2012, becoming a spiritual center for the local community and devotees who come to pay respect and visit.

The most outstanding feature of Wat Khao Chawang is its unique wooden ordination hall, fully decorated with intricate wood carvings. This hall is regarded as the only one of its kind in Chanthaburi Province. The idea was initiated by Phra Athikan Nu Thong Hasajitto, the abbot, who envisioned building a hall unlike any other. Construction and carving began in late 2010, with skilled woodcarvers from Chiang Mai brought in to create this masterpiece. Both the interior and exterior of the ordination hall are adorned with detailed wood carvings narrating profound stories of Buddhism and local culture.

Various types of wood were used in the construction, including teak, takhian, pradu, and mai daeng. Some were repurposed from leftover materials, while others were specially purchased by the temple to ensure durability and beauty. The carvings depict the life of the Buddha, episodes from Buddhist scriptures such as the Vessantara Jataka, as well as the twelve zodiac signs from astrology and scenes of traditional rural life, reflecting the way of life and cultural heritage of past generations.

The wooden ordination hall was completed on May 5, 2013, and has since become an important place not only for religious purposes but also for cultural and educational value. It welcomes students, scholars, and tourists to explore, study, and appreciate both Buddhism and Thai craftsmanship through its exquisite wooden artwork. The abbot has opened the temple to the public, allowing visitors from near and far to admire the hall’s beauty and take memorable photographs. Today, Wat Khao Chawang has become not just a place of worship for the local community but also a cultural landmark of Chanthaburi, showcasing the faith, creativity, and artistic skills of Thai Buddhist artisans.
