Phet Pho Sai Cave is located in the Khao Lueam area of Khlong Kai Thueng Subdistrict, Khlong Hat District, Sa Kaeo Province. It is a natural cave used as a monks’ retreat and a place where local residents and devotees come to practice Dhamma, make merit, and meditate in a deeply peaceful atmosphere. Unlike typical tourist caves that focus on adventure or geological sightseeing, this cave offers a sense of calm and spiritual stillness, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet space to rest the mind and practice meditation in the midst of unspoiled nature.

At the foot of the hill, a sacred courtyard serves as the starting point before ascending to the cave. Visitors and pilgrims usually begin by paying respect to Buddha images and sacred objects, calming the mind before climbing up. This courtyard is adorned with various holy images and small shrines and is often used for local Buddhist ceremonies. It has long been a spiritual gathering place for the surrounding community.

The path up to the cave consists of steps that were improved and rebuilt by the presiding monk together with local villagers, making the climb safer and more convenient. Although the path gradually ascends along the hillside, the stairway allows even the elderly or those unfamiliar with forest trails to make the climb without excessive difficulty. Large trees lining the route provide shade, and the air remains cool thanks to the regenerating forest that still maintains much of its natural richness.

Upon reaching the cave entrance, visitors are greeted by a distinctive stillness. Inside, the air is cool and not stuffy, as natural openings in the rock allow air to circulate continuously. The cave features naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites of varied shapes; some shimmer beautifully under torchlight, while certain sections of the cave wall display mineral patterns created by dripping water over long periods of time. Together, these elements give the interior an atmosphere that feels both sacred and serene, perfectly suited for meditation and contemplation.

Within the monks’ retreat area, several Buddha images are enshrined at different points. The space is used for individual practice as well as for occasional religious activities such as annual merit-making ceremonies, chanting, and observances on important Buddhist days. Local residents hold the cave in great reverence, believing that visiting Tham Phet Pho Sai, paying respect to the Buddha images, and meditating with sincere intention can strengthen the spirit, bring blessings, and help clear and steady the mind.

Those who come to practice Dhamma here often remark that the cave’s atmosphere strongly supports meditation. The silence is natural, not empty, filled with subtle sounds of wind, rustling leaves, distant forest life, and sometimes the soft drip of water. This combination makes it easier for visitors to relax and settle into stillness. The cave has therefore become a destination for people seeking a brief retreat from everyday life, even if only for a short visit.

Although Tham Phet Pho Sai is not as large or dramatic as some of Thailand’s famous caves, its understated beauty and relatively untouched interior offer an authentic experience of a natural cave environment. The dripstone formations and mineral layers visible on the cave walls and ceiling provide a quiet reminder of the slow, patient work of nature over countless years. For those interested in both nature and spirituality, the cave offers a unique blend of physical and inner exploration.
