Ban Khlong Malako Tai Natural Bird Garden is a natural bird sanctuary located in Moo 18, Ban Khlong Malako Tai, Sa Khwan Subdistrict, Mueang Sa Kaeo District, Sa Kaeo Province. The site covers approximately 7 rai of mixed deciduous forest and serves as a thriving habitat for numerous bird species and small wildlife. Despite its modest size, the area remains rich, peaceful, and ecologically significant due to the preservation efforts of the local community.

 

From May to October each year, the garden becomes especially lively as it enters the breeding season of the Oriental Darter (Snake Bird), a large waterbird rarely found in high numbers elsewhere. During this period, many birds arrive to pair, build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young on the tall trees throughout the forest. In addition to Oriental Darters, various bird species—including Little Cormorants, Pond Herons, Egrets, and other waterbirds—inhabit this natural ecosystem.

 

The garden's mixed deciduous forest, with tall trees providing dense shade, creates an ideal environment for nesting. Visitors walking through the area will hear a chorus of bird calls, especially in the early morning and late afternoon when adult birds are feeding or returning to their nests. It is an excellent destination for birdwatchers who want to observe natural behaviors up close without trekking deep into the wilderness.

 

Although the area is not large, it represents an outstanding example of community-driven conservation. Local residents have worked together to protect the forest, avoid disturbing nesting periods, and maintain the habitat by preserving trees and natural resources. This cooperation has transformed the bird garden into one of Sa Kaeo’s most important birdwatching sites and a notable location along the region’s “Snake Bird Watching Route.”

Most sections of the road are paved and suitable for private vehicles.
