Ban Laeng Community Forest is located within the protected forest area of Krachet, Phae, and Klaeng Forest Reserves, Moo 6, Ban Laeng Subdistrict, Mueang District, Rayong Province. Covering an area of about 5,000 rai, this forest once suffered from severe degradation, dominated by dry grassland and frequent wildfires during the dry season. These repeated fires devastated the local ecosystem, prompting the local community to unite in restoring the once lush forest.

The community’s efforts officially began on October 6, 1992, with the establishment of the “Ban Laeng Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Club.” The group’s main goal was to rehabilitate the forest and preserve it for future generations. Villagers of all ages—local leaders, teachers, monks, and youth—worked together to prevent forest fires, replant native trees, and construct firebreaks to protect the area from recurring destruction.

At first, the community faced great challenges. The land was dry, the soil infertile, and reforestation progress was slow. However, with collective effort and support from both public and private organizations, the results began to show. Within a few years, greenery gradually returned. Native species such as Yang Na (Dipterocarpus alatus), Payung, and Maka Mong began to thrive again, alongside pioneer plants like Cassia siamea and Acacia auriculiformis.

As the trees returned, wildlife followed. Birds, squirrels, and small reptiles once again found refuge in the forest. During certain seasons, colorful butterflies and insects fill the area, turning it into a living outdoor classroom for ecology and environmental education.

Ban Laeng Community Forest has been nationally recognized as a model of community-led conservation. It received the prestigious “Green Globe Award” in the community category from PTT Group, highlighting how local people can achieve lasting success in protecting and managing natural resources.

Inside the forest, there is a nature study trail with interpretive signs about native plants and wildlife, as well as a scenic viewpoint overlooking the forest canopy. The site also includes an environmental learning pavilion that displays information on ecosystems, water management, and fire prevention—frequently visited by students and researchers from across the region.

To reach Ban Laeng Community Forest, drive from Rayong city via the motorway and turn onto Highway 36. Pass Big C Rayong and the Koh Kloi Intersection, then continue straight to Ban Laeng Intersection. Turn left, drive past Wat Chulamani and Wat Ban Laeng (opposite the Ban Laeng Subdistrict Administrative Organization), and continue about 8 kilometers. Turn left again at the T-junction to find the entrance to the community forest, clearly marked by local signage.

The forest also serves as an environmental education center for visitors and nearby communities. Activities include guided nature walks, tree-planting events, and forest-fire monitoring volunteer programs. The tranquil, shady atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for eco-tourism and community-based learning experiences.

Visitors are advised to contact the Ban Laeng Subdistrict Administrative Organization in advance, as some areas may be temporarily closed for forest restoration or community events. Local staff can provide information about current conditions, travel routes, and visitor guidelines, such as refraining from collecting plants, lighting fires, or leaving waste behind—helping to preserve the forest’s beauty for generations to come.

Ban Laeng Community Forest stands today as not only a green sanctuary of Rayong Province but also a living testament to the power of community collaboration. It reminds us that when people live in harmony with nature, the forest will heal and flourish once more.
