Phra Phutthabat Khao Pradu is a revered Buddhist site located in Ban Laeng Sub-district, Mueang District, Rayong Province. It is famous for the natural Buddha’s footprint carved on a large slanted rock known locally as “Hin Dard.” The rock tilts about 40 degrees toward the west, covering an area of roughly 300 square wah, and lies about 150 meters from the mountain base. The surrounding area is peaceful and shaded with large trees, offering a tranquil atmosphere ideal for meditation and a panoramic view over Rayong City from the hilltop.

The highlight of Phra Phutthabat Khao Pradu is the sacred footprint impressed on the natural rock surface. Though modest in size, the imprint descends gently into the stone, believed by locals to be the footprint of the Lord Buddha during His journey to spread the Dhamma across this land. Faith in this legend inspired villagers to build a stairway and a small pavilion for pilgrims wishing to pay homage at the site.

The name “Khao Pradu” derives from the abundance of pradu trees (Pterocarpus macrocarpus) growing around the foothill. Oral traditions tell that the sacred footprint was discovered decades ago by a forest-monk in meditation. One night he reportedly heard gentle music drifting in the wind and, following the sound uphill, found the footprint on the stone. The tale remains part of local folklore and continues to be retold through generations.

Each year, a grand merit-making fair called the Phra Phutthabat Khao Pradu Worship Festival takes place around February, coinciding with the Chinese New Year. In 2025 the festival was held from February 12 to 16. The celebration features almsgiving, cultural performances, a sacred procession, and the gilding of the Buddha’s footprint for good fortune. Locals and visitors from all over Rayong join in this joyous event, believing that worshiping the footprint during the festival brings blessings and success throughout the year.

Getting to Phra Phutthabat Khao Pradu is easy. From downtown Rayong, take the local road No. 7005 through Ban Laeng for about 12 kilometers. Signs clearly indicate the way to Wat Khao Phra Bat. At the foot of the hill, a spacious parking lot and a staircase lead visitors up about 150 meters to the sacred spot. The slope is fairly steep but equipped with handrails and resting points, suitable even for those who enjoy a gentle nature walk.

Apart from the footprint itself, the site offers a scenic viewpoint overlooking Rayong City and the Gulf of Thailand on clear days. A large Buddha image sits prominently in the courtyard for devotees to pay homage. On some mornings, monks walk down to collect alms while villagers offer food, creating a serene glimpse into local Buddhist life.

Phra Phutthabat Khao Pradu thus stands not only as a sacred landmark of Rayong Province but also as a living symbol of enduring faith passed down through generations. Pilgrims who climb the hill find not just spiritual merit but also quiet beauty and a deeper appreciation of the local way of life.
