Koh Thalu In the eastern sea of the Gulf of Thailand lies a small island known as Koh Thalu, surrounded by clear turquoise waters and flourishing coral reefs. The island is located about 6 kilometers east of Koh Kudi and approximately 12 kilometers from Koh Samet, covering an area of around 69 rai. Most of the island is covered with dense forest, with steep rocky cliffs along the western side, while the eastern and southern sides feature stretches of fine white sandy beaches caressed by gentle waves.

 

Koh Thalu earned its name from a large natural hole that cuts through its limestone cliff, formed by long-term erosion. This striking feature can be seen from afar and serves as a signature landmark for visitors. The island is also home to a large number of seagulls and flying foxes, along with sea turtles that occasionally come ashore to lay their eggs, making it a sanctuary of rich marine and forest biodiversity.

 

The underwater world around Koh Thalu is remarkably vibrant. The clear water reveals colorful coral reefs such as staghorn, brain, and flower corals, as well as a variety of fish species. It is one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in Rayong Province, attracting both casual visitors and experienced divers who wish to explore the hidden beauty beneath the surface.

 

Getting There: Boats to Koh Thalu depart from Ban Phe Pier in Rayong. Both private speedboats and local tour boats are available, with travel times ranging from 45 minutes to an hour. Visitors should check the weather forecast before traveling, as the sea can be rough during the monsoon season (May–October). The best time to visit is between November and April, when the sea is calm, the water is crystal clear, and the weather is perfect for diving and beach relaxation.

 

Koh Thalu is under the supervision of Khao Laem Ya–Mu Ko Samet National Park. The number of visitors per day is limited to protect its fragile ecosystem. Tourists are required to follow park regulations, such as not leaving litter and avoiding any damage to coral reefs. Responsible tourism is key to preserving Koh Thalu’s pristine nature for future generations.
