Khao Ploi Waen Chedi is located in Khao Ploi Waen Subdistrict, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province, along Highway No. 3174. It is a sacred and historic landmark that has long been a spiritual center for the local community. The chedi was constructed in 1832 during the reign of King Rama V by Phraya Chanthaburi, who chose the highest point of Khao Ploi Waen as the site, making the monument stand out prominently on the hilltop and visible from afar.
The chedi is built in the Lankan-style circular form, reflecting the influence of foreign Buddhist architecture blended with Thai artistry. Enshrined within are the sacred relics of the Buddha, making it a highly revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists across Chanthaburi and nearby provinces. In addition, the temple grounds feature a mondop housing a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, which was built in 1928 to replace the original one that had been damaged. This sacred site has since become a focal point of faith and worship for visitors who come to seek blessings and spiritual peace.
Beyond its religious significance, Khao Ploi Waen Chedi is also closely tied to the history and economy of Chanthaburi. The surrounding area was once the very first gemstone mining site in the province, which later earned Chanthaburi its reputation as the "City of Gems." Thus, the chedi not only symbolizes Buddhist devotion but also represents the cultural and economic heritage of the region.
Today, the chedi serves as both a spiritual retreat and a cultural attraction. Visitors can ascend the hill to pay homage to the Buddha’s relics, venerate the replica footprint, and enjoy the tranquil natural surroundings. The panoramic views from the summit provide a serene and inspiring atmosphere, attracting those who seek both spiritual merit and cultural discovery. Moreover, visiting this site offers a glimpse into Chanthaburi’s gem mining past, enriching the overall experience with a blend of faith, history, and tradition.
Khao Ploi Waen Chedi thus stands not only as a sacred religious monument but also as a lasting testament to the intertwined heritage of Buddhism, art, history, and local livelihood. It is a place worth preserving and sharing with future generations, reflecting the pride and cultural richness of Chanthaburi on both a local and global stage.
