Luang Por Til (Wat Hua Thanon), located in Hua Thanon Subdistrict, Chonburi Province, is about 10 kilometers away from the district center along the Phanat Nikhom–Sa Si Liam route. This temple is well-known as a spiritual center for the local community. Every year during the Songkran Festival, an important traditional event takes place—the annual procession of Luang Pho Tio, the temple’s revered Buddha image. This event, held on April 19 each year, has been passed down through generations and is a highlight of local culture, bringing unity to the community.

Luang Pho Tio is a sacred Buddha image in the Mara Vijaya (Victory over Mara) posture. What makes it special is that it is carved from Mai Tiao, a rare type of wood known for its strength and durability. In Lao, this wood is called “Tio,” which is how the Buddha image got its name. According to local beliefs, a Buddha image carved from Mai Tiao is considered highly auspicious, offering protection and blessings to its devotees. It is also believed that those who join the procession or pay respect to Luang Pho Tio will receive good fortune and have their wishes fulfilled—whether related to work, finances, health, or love.

The procession begins on the morning of April 19. Luang Pho Tio is ceremoniously brought out of the temple’s ordination hall and placed on a beautifully decorated palanquin. Villagers from near and far gather to escort the Buddha image through the streets of the community. The atmosphere is lively, with traditional drums, local music, and chanting filling the air. Along the way, participants splash water, symbolizing blessings and adding to the joyful spirit of Songkran.

For the local community, this procession is a profound expression of their faith in Buddhism and devotion to Luang Pho Tio. Households prepare offerings such as flowers, incense, candles, and fragrant water to present during the event. As the procession passes by, families come out to pay their respects and sprinkle water on the Buddha image, a ritual believed to cleanse away misfortune and invite good luck. Many believe that bathing Luang Pho Tio not only purifies the spirit but also provides the strength to overcome life’s challenges.

The deep reverence for Luang Pho Tio is rooted in both local wisdom and Buddhist beliefs. Villagers believe that the sacred image has spiritual power to protect and guide those facing difficulties, whether related to health, livelihood, or personal matters. Because of this, the event draws large crowds every year, including visitors from other provinces. They come not only to seek blessings but also to witness and take part in a rare and authentic cultural tradition.

Aside from the procession, the festival includes other Songkran-related activities, such as bathing the Buddha statues, merit-making ceremonies, traditional games, and local food stalls. Visitors can enjoy regional delicacies, like khao chae (a traditional Thai rice dish served with fragrant water), local desserts, and fresh seafood from Chonburi. These activities not only enhance the festival experience but also support the local economy by providing income for community members.

The procession of Luang Pho Tio is much more than a religious ceremony—it is a celebration of cultural heritage and community spirit. It serves as a platform for younger generations to learn about local traditions and encourages them to continue preserving these practices. It also strengthens social bonds within the community, fostering unity and pride.

For travelers interested in joining this event, Wat Hua Thanon is easily accessible, being only about 10 kilometers from Phanat Nikhom District. The event takes place annually on April 19, aligning perfectly with the Songkran Festival period. Visitors are advised to plan their trip carefully, dress respectfully for temple grounds, and prepare for the festive atmosphere, which includes water-splashing activities.

The Luang Pho Tio procession is a beautiful example of how local traditions blend faith, belief, and community life. Attending the event is not just about seeking blessings but also about gaining a deeper understanding of Chonburi’s culture and way of life. It offers a unique experience for both Thais and international travelers to witness the vitality of living Thai traditions and the enduring power of collective faith.
