Wat Thammanimit is a private Buddhist temple under the Maha Nikaya sect, located in Ban Suan Subdistrict, Mueang Chonburi District, Chonburi Province. Covering an area of approximately 110 rai, the temple provides a peaceful and serene environment, ideal for merit-making, meditation, and spiritual retreat. It was founded in 1941 (B.E. 2484) by Mr. Thammanoon Singkarnvanich, a local resident of Soi Tha Ruea, Mueang Chonburi, who generously donated 21 rai, 2 ngan, and 71 square wah of land to establish the temple. His intention was to create a spiritual center and a place for the community to practice Buddhism and come together for religious activities. Wat Thammanimit was officially granted Wisungkhamsima (a consecrated boundary for monastic ordination ceremonies) on February 2, 1956 (B.E. 2499), marking its formal recognition as a site for important Buddhist rituals.

The temple complex features several important structures that support both religious and community functions. These include the ubosot (ordination hall) for monastic ceremonies, a sermon hall for merit-making and communal gatherings, monks’ residences, a bell tower symbolizing peace, a Pariyatti Dhamma school for the study of Buddhist scriptures, and a building used as a school for local youth. These facilities highlight the temple’s role not only as a place of worship but also as an educational and cultural center that benefits the surrounding community.

Wat Thammanimit is well known as a center for Vipassana meditation practice. Under the guidance of its abbot, Phra Khru Nimit Thammanurak, the temple has become a hub for spreading Buddhist teachings and Vipassana practice. It also offers education in Pali and Abhidhamma studies to monks and laypeople, fostering a deeper understanding of Buddhist doctrines and encouraging spiritual development.

One of the temple’s most prominent and revered landmarks is Phra Phuttha Mongkhon Nimit, a majestic concrete Buddha image adorned with colorful mosaic tiles. The statue is crafted in the rare “Boat Seated Buddha” posture, with the Buddha seated on a throne with legs pendant. The left hand rests palm-down on the lap, while the right hand is placed beside the body. Towering at 34 meters tall, this Buddha image is located at the base of a hill within the temple grounds, making it a striking sight visible from afar. Visitors can pay their respects at the statue and then climb to the hilltop, which serves as a scenic viewpoint offering panoramic views of Chonburi city and the surrounding landscape.

Wat Thammanimit is easily accessible from Chonburi city, making it a popular destination for worshippers and tourists alike. The temple is especially lively during major Buddhist festivals such as Visakha Bucha Day, Magha Bucha Day, and Asalha Bucha Day, when it hosts special activities including candlelight processions (wiang tian), temporary ordination ceremonies, and chanting events to usher in the New Year. These occasions draw large numbers of participants from both nearby areas and other provinces.

In addition to its religious significance, Wat Thammanimit plays an important role in cultural and spiritual tourism. It serves as a sanctuary for those seeking to escape the busyness of daily life, offering a calm space for meditation and self-reflection. The enormous, beautifully decorated Buddha image also makes the temple a favorite spot for photographers, as its striking appearance creates a memorable backdrop for capturing special moments.

With its rich history, beautiful architecture, and strong connection to both religion and community, Wat Thammanimit is a must-visit destination when traveling in Chonburi Province. A visit here offers more than just sightseeing  is an opportunity to pay homage, gain merit, and immerse oneself in Thailand’s cultural and spiritual heritage. The experience leaves visitors with a deep sense of peace, inspiration, and a renewed appreciation for the profound beauty of Thai Buddhist traditions.
