Bang Phra Reservoir is located behind Khao Chalak in Bang Phra Subdistrict, Si Racha District, Chon Buri Province. It is an important water source that sustains the local communities in Si Racha and is surrounded by lush mountains and forests. What makes this reservoir special is not only its role as a vital water source but also its function as a natural habitat for a wide variety of bird species. Over the years, it has become a popular destination for birdwatchers and nature lovers, especially for those looking for a peaceful getaway close to Bangkok, as it can be reached within just a few hours.
In the past, the area around Bang Phra Reservoir faced issues with illegal bird hunting by local villagers, which led to a significant decline in bird populations. To protect the ecosystem, the Royal Forest Department declared the surrounding area a wildlife sanctuary and planted additional trees to provide food sources and create a safe environment for birds to breed and thrive. Thanks to these conservation efforts, the ecosystem has recovered, and today the reservoir is well-known as one of the top birdwatching spots near Bangkok, attracting both amateur and professional birdwatchers throughout the year.
The area around the reservoir offers several interesting spots to explore. The Bang Phra Non-Hunting Area Office is a great starting point for visitors. It is spacious and shaded by large trees, with walking paths leading to the reservoir’s edge, making it perfect for birdwatching and photography. Visitors can expect to see a wide range of bird species, including forest birds, waterfowl, and grassland birds. Some of the commonly spotted birds include the Stripe-throated Bulbul, Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Plain Prinia, Greater Coucal, and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker. This rich biodiversity makes it an excellent place to learn about birds and their ecosystems.
For those who want to immerse themselves in nature, the area also provides a campsite where visitors can pitch tents and spend the night. Waking up to the soothing sounds of birds in the early morning is a truly memorable experience, especially for families or groups of friends seeking a relaxing outdoor adventure.
Another highlight of Bang Phra Reservoir is Wang Hin, where Wang Hin Creek flows into the reservoir. The landscape features low hills surrounding a large pond, creating an ideal habitat for waterfowl. The trees along the edge of the pond serve as a breeding ground for various species of herons and egrets. This area has been designated as the Wang Hin Natural Bird Park to protect the birds and provide a unique eco-tourism site for visitors.
Getting to Bang Phra Reservoir is very convenient. For those traveling by private car, start from Bang Phra Market and follow the same route as the entrance to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. Pass the Bang Phra Golf Course, and when you reach a three-way intersection, turn right. The entrance to the reservoir will be on the left side shortly after. Alternatively, if you turn left at the intersection and continue straight until kilometer marker 16, you’ll find the Non-Hunting Area Office on the right. From there, if you continue driving another 4 kilometers along the reservoir road, you will reach the Wang Hin birdwatching point.
Visitors without private transportation can also get there easily. Tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis are available at the station under the pedestrian bridge near Bang Phra Market. Fares are quite affordable, with tuk-tuk rides costing around 40-50 THB and motorcycle taxis around 15 THB.
Bang Phra Reservoir combines the beauty of nature, a thriving ecosystem, and convenient accessibility. It is ideal for both relaxing leisure trips and educational eco-tourism. Whether you visit for a day to enjoy scenic views and birdwatching or stay overnight to fully soak in the tranquility, this destination offers a unique opportunity to appreciate nature and understand the importance of sustainable conservation. It’s a perfect escape for those who love nature and want to find a serene, charming place close to Bangkok.
