HTMS Chakri Naruebet is a significant warship of the Royal Thai Navy, located at the Chuk Samet Deep-Sea Port in Sattahip District, Chonburi Province. The ship was graciously bestowed its name by His Majesty the King as “Chakri Naruebet,” meaning “the greatest of the Chakri Dynasty,” symbolizing honor and pride for the Royal Thai Navy in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty. The construction of HTMS Chakri Naruebet began in 1994, with the Royal Thai Navy commissioning Spain to build the ship using the most advanced shipbuilding technology of that era. This resulted in a strong, durable vessel with high performance suitable for a wide range of maritime missions.
The ship is large and impressive, consisting of 11 decks, with a length of 182 meters and a width of 30.5 meters. It was designed to support various naval operations. Inside the ship are the command center, crew quarters, kitchen, and storage areas for numerous weapons and equipment. Its size and layout allow it to serve as the flagship of the Royal Thai Navy, acting as the central hub for command and control of all naval operations at sea.
One of the most notable features of HTMS Chakri Naruebet is that it is Thailand’s first and only aircraft carrier. The flight deck is large enough to accommodate vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) fighter aircraft and multiple helicopters at the same time, enabling comprehensive air support missions. Additionally, the ship is equipped with advanced long-range radar and modern air defense systems, greatly enhancing its capabilities in national defense and wartime operations.
The ship plays vital roles both during peacetime and wartime. In times of conflict, it serves as the central command center, overseeing and directing naval and aerial operations to counter enemy threats while supporting the Royal Thai Navy and allied forces. In peacetime, it is deployed for humanitarian missions, such as assisting victims of natural disasters, transporting relief supplies, and evacuating civilians from danger zones. This highlights the ship’s importance not only in defense but also in providing safety and security to the people.
HTMS Chakri Naruebet also serves as a historical and educational tourist destination for both locals and visitors. It is particularly appealing to those interested in military history and naval operations. Visitors can tour the interior of the ship to learn about its construction, structural design, and the various weapons and technologies onboard. Experiencing the atmosphere of a massive warship firsthand is both fascinating and unforgettable. However, foreign tourists are required to submit a formal request for permission to visit, addressed to the Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Fleet, Sattahip, Chonburi 20180, to comply with the Royal Thai Navy’s security regulations.
Traveling to HTMS Chakri Naruebet is convenient, as the ship is located at Chuk Samet Deep-Sea Port, a strategic point for the Royal Thai Navy in eastern Thailand. The surrounding area is filled with other attractions, such as Sattahip Beach, the Royal Thai Navy Museum, and local markets offering fresh seafood. This makes it ideal to plan a trip that combines education and relaxation.
HTMS Chakri Naruebet is more than just a warship. It stands as a symbol of technological advancement and the Royal Thai Navy’s unwavering commitment to protecting the nation. It is also a valuable learning center, fostering understanding of national defense and the navy’s role among both Thai citizens and international visitors. Visiting this remarkable ship provides not only an exciting experience but also a deeper appreciation for the importance of sovereignty and national security.
