The Khao Chi Chan Buddha Image in Chonburi Province is one of the most magnificent and awe-inspiring landmarks in eastern Thailand. It is located along the same route as Wat Yansangwararam. Travelers can reach it via Sukhumvit Road, turning left at kilometer marker 160 and continuing for about 6 kilometers. The route is clearly marked with signs, making navigation easy. This same road also leads to Wat Nong Tap Tao, allowing visitors to conveniently plan a trip to multiple destinations in one day.
What makes the Khao Chi Chan Buddha truly unique is the technique used to create it. The image was etched into the face of a massive limestone cliff using laser technology, with the outlines filled in with gold, resulting in a striking and radiant appearance. The Buddha is in the “Mara Vichai” posture, symbolizing victory over evil forces and obstacles. The artistic style combines elements of both Sukhothai and Lanna art, resulting in a figure that is both graceful and majestic, exuding an air of sanctity.
This colossal Buddha image stands an impressive 130 meters tall, with a lap width of 70 meters, making it the largest carved outdoor Buddha image in the world. Its official name is “Phra Phuttha Maha Wachira Uttamo Phat Sasada.” The construction began in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s reign (King Rama IX). Enshrined within the chest of the image are sacred relics of the Buddha, making it a deeply revered spiritual site for Buddhists.
The surrounding area has been beautifully landscaped into a relaxing park, with shaded walkways and refreshing breezes, making it an ideal place for both worship and leisure. It is also a scenic viewpoint where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and take memorable photographs. The entire site is maintained by the Royal Thai Navy’s Marine Corps, ensuring cleanliness and safety for all visitors.
Many people come here to pay their respects and make merit, especially on weekends and important Buddhist holidays when the atmosphere becomes lively. From Bangkok, the journey takes about two hours, making it suitable for a day trip. Visitors can also include nearby attractions in their itinerary, such as Wat Yansangwararam, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, Pattaya, or the Silverlake Vineyard.
The Khao Chi Chan Buddha is not only a cultural and artistic landmark but also a symbol of faith and unity among the Thai people, who came together to create this magnificent monument in honor of their beloved king. For anyone visiting Chonburi or Pattaya, this site is a must-see destination. Its breathtaking beauty and serene surroundings leave visitors with a lasting sense of peace and inspiration.
