In the past, this area was known as “Ang Hin” (Stone Basin), a coastal community with a distinctive landscape featuring elevated land and large scattered stones. During the reign of King Rama III, Westerners and people from Bangkok began to frequent the area as a popular seaside retreat. Over time, the name “Ang Hin” gradually evolved into a more universal form, becoming “Ang Sila,” which is how it is known today.

 

Evidence of the name “Ang Sila” can be found in a royal letter written by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) when he visited Chonburi and stayed overnight in this area. The letter, dated January 9, 1876, described the land as having elevated mounds with large stones and two elongated ponds. One pond measured 7 sok deep, 7 sok wide, and 10 wa long, while the other was 6 sok deep, 1 wa 2 sok wide, and 7 wa long. These ponds were used to collect rainwater, which did not seep away, providing a vital water source for the locals and sailors traveling through the area. In years with heavy rainfall, the ponds provided enough water for use throughout the year. However, in years with low rainfall, the water would last only about five to six months, and the community would then depend on other rainwater ponds dug in nearby villages. The significance of these ponds led to the area being called “Ban Ang Sila,” a name that has been passed down to this day.
