Wiang Lo Ancient Site A Legacy of Civilization in Phayao’s Ing River Basin. Wiang Lo Ancient Site, located in the Ing River basin of Phayao Province, is a significant remnant of a once-thriving ancient civilization. The site is characterized by its ancient brick city walls, moats, and earthen embankments, stretching approximately 2,750 meters in total. These features demonstrate advanced engineering and systematic urban planning of the past, especially with the four city gates positioned at the cardinal directions reflecting the cosmological beliefs and landscape design principles of the ancient Lanna people.

Situated on fertile flatlands, Wiang Lo Ancient Site was an ideal location for settlement and agriculture, enabling sustainable livelihoods for its inhabitants in ancient times. Today, scattered ruins remain within the site, including old temples, sandstone Buddha statues, and stupa bases. The sandstone Buddha images are especially notable for their intricate designs and religious significance, showcasing the strong Buddhist faith of the people and artistic influences from both Lanna and Lan Xang traditions of the era.

In recent years, Wiang Lo Ancient Site has been excavated and restored by archaeological authorities to preserve it as a valuable resource for historical research and heritage tourism. Visitors can experience the tranquil atmosphere of the ancient city, exploring the visible remains of moats, brick walls, and foundations of ancient structures. In addition to walking through the site, exhibitions display artifacts and information uncovered during excavation, providing visitors with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Wiang Lo’s historical importance.

Wiang Lo Ancient Site is more than just ruins; it is a living heritage that connects today’s generation with the wisdom, culture, and beliefs of the past. As a testament to Phayao’s cultural roots, it symbolizes identity and continuity.
