Bamboo Weaving & Ceramic Craft Group, Ban Chaipattana, Sa Kaeo showcases a contemporary craft that blends local bamboo weaving wisdom with ceramic artistry, resulting in products that are elegant, durable, and genuinely functional. The initiative began with the family of Mrs. Mut Sue-sat, a craft enthusiast passionate about bamboo weaving. Determined to improve her skills, she trained in bamboo-weaving-over-ceramic techniques at Burapha University, Chonburi, and further learned from Grandma Pranee Boribun, a respected master weaver, to refine both technique and fine craftsmanship.

Once the skills were solid, the family passed them on to neighbors so people could earn extra income and make good use of their free time. A concrete milestone came in 1998 (B.E. 2541), when Ban Chaipattana community held a village assembly to found the “Bamboo Weaving Over Ceramic Group” under the self-reliant community economy policy. Multiple government bodies supported the effort, including the Provincial Industry Office, Subdistrict Administrative Organization, District Agriculture Office, and local development officers, alongside community leaders. The group started with 18 members and has gradually grown to around 51 members today.

The heart of the craft is the synergy between the bamboo structure and the ceramic surface. It starts with selecting local bamboo, shaving, splitting, de-burring, and kiln-drying to reduce moisture, then weaving tightly and smoothly to the intended pattern. The woven bamboo is then fitted or wrapped onto ceramic pieces such as vases, containers, home décor, or lamp frames. This step demands mastery of curvature, thickness, and tension so the bamboo neither cracks nor lifts from the ceramic. The result is distinctive: the warm grain of bamboo paired with the cool, sleek sheen of ceramic.

Signature items range from bamboo-wrapped ceramic vases, desk accessories, and assorted containers to contemporary lamp shades. Many pieces feature modernized patterns and coordinated ceramic tones that suit minimalist or tropical interiors, making them ideal as souvenirs, décor accents, and everyday functional objects.

Beyond extra income, the craft strengthens community bonds through group work, skill training, and knowledge transfer to younger generations, building pride in local wisdom. Sa Kaeo is therefore known not only for nature and its border trade, but also for this gentle “creative craft” that tells the story of local life.
