Khao Hin Krok is a remarkable geological formation located in Moo 10, Ban Makhamin, Sa Kaeo Province. It features a natural rock basin that resembles a giant mortar (“krok” in Thai). The formation resulted from long-term compaction and hardening of soil and sediment layers, followed by weathering and erosion through seasonal climatic changes. Over time, these processes created a hollow center surrounded by raised rims—giving the hill its distinctive bowl shape and name, “Khao Hin Krok.”

 

The surrounding area is covered with mixed deciduous forest featuring native species such as Shorea obtusa (teng), Shorea siamensis (rang), Dipterocarpus obtusifolius (hiang), Dipterocarpus alatus (yang na), and other hardwoods. The environment is tranquil, with birdsong echoing through the forest, especially from the rainy season into early winter when the greenery is most lush and the mountain breeze cools the air.

 

Geologically, the hill is composed of sandstone mixed with clay that solidified into stratified layers over thousands of years. Natural erosion and rainfall sculpted the land into a deep, circular depression with elevated edges. Some parts exhibit cracks and fractures, evidence of ancient tectonic pressure. For geologists, this area is an excellent example of a “weathering bowl” formation—rarely found in Thailand—illustrating the dynamic interactions between rock, water, and climate.

 

Visitors can hike to the summit of Khao Hin Krok for panoramic views of surrounding farmland and forest. The hill is moderate in height, and the trail takes about 15–20 minutes on a mix of dirt and rocky paths. It is suitable for light trekking and nature walks. Sunrise and sunset are particularly stunning as sunlight glows golden across the rock surface, highlighting the hill’s unique textures.

 

The best time to visit is from November to February when temperatures are cool and visibility is clear. The rainy season (June–October) also offers lush scenery, though visitors should watch for slippery paths and wear good walking shoes with grip.

 

Getting There From Sa Kaeo City, take Highway 317 toward Wang Nam Yen District, then turn onto the local road to Ban Makhamin. The total distance is about 45 kilometers. The access road is well-marked, and visitors can park near the foothill and walk approximately 500 meters to the viewpoint. The site is easily accessible for short nature trips.

 

Khao Hin Krok is both a natural and geological attraction ideal for visitors who enjoy studying rock formations, hiking, photography, or simply relaxing in a peaceful forest setting. It remains one of Sa Kaeo’s lesser-known natural wonders, offering insight into the earth’s slow but powerful transformations.
