Khao Chakan is a striking limestone mountain located in Khao Chakan Subdistrict, Sa Kaeo Province, about 17 kilometers from Sa Kaeo City. It lies along Highway 317 (Sa Kaeo–Chanthaburi) between kilometer markers 131 and 132. Turning left from the main road, visitors will soon see a grand limestone massif rising from open plains — a defining natural landmark and one of Sa Kaeo’s most distinctive attractions.
This mountain range consists of three connected limestone peaks: Khao Ming to the left, Khao Chakan in the middle, and Khao Falamii to the right. Khao Chakan, the tallest of the three, stands about 240 meters above sea level. The ridge runs nearly perpendicular to the north–south axis, creating a dramatic line of cliffs visible from afar across surrounding fields and villages.
The area has been designated as the Khao Chakan Arboretum under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. The site preserves the region’s natural limestone ecosystem, where erosion has sculpted unique rock patterns and formed several caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. These geological features make Khao Chakan both a scenic and educational destination.
At the mountain’s base stands Wat Tham Khao Chakan, a revered temple and spiritual landmark. A concrete staircase leads visitors up to the main cave housing a golden Buddha image, where one can also enjoy sweeping views over Sa Kaeo City. Wild monkeys inhabit the foothills and temple area, adding a lively element to the scene. Visitors often feed them but should follow park guidelines for safety and environmental care.
One of Khao Chakan’s most enchanting sights occurs every evening when millions of bats emerge from their cave homes, spiraling across the twilight sky in a long, winding stream. The spectacle usually begins around 5:30–6:00 PM, lasting nearly 20 minutes. As the sun sets behind the cliffs, the bats’ silhouettes form dark ribbons against golden light — a mesmerizing display of nature’s rhythm.
Beyond its visual appeal, Khao Chakan offers scientific value in geology and ecology, showcasing the biodiversity of limestone ecosystems. The area supports a variety of plants, birds, monkeys, and bats, coexisting naturally with nearby communities.
Getting There From Sa Kaeo City, take Highway 317 toward Chanthaburi. Around kilometer markers 131–132, follow the sign and turn left about 1 kilometer to reach Wat Tham Khao Chakan at the mountain’s base. The site is easily accessible by private car, van, or motorcycle, and parking is available at the temple.
Visitors usually arrive in the morning to pay respects at the temple and feed the monkeys, and again at sunset to witness the breathtaking flight of bats. The combination of religion, landscape, and wildlife makes Khao Chakan a unique and memorable experience.
