Khirithan Dam is located in Makham District, approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Chanthaburi Province, Thailand. This multipurpose dam plays a vital role in supporting the local community and regional development, especially in energy production, agriculture, water management, and environmental conservation. It was constructed by the Department of Energy Development and Promotion under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment as part of a project aimed at sustainable resource management and improving the quality of life for surrounding communities.

The dam has a maximum water storage level at an elevation of 205 meters above sea level and can hold up to approximately 76 million cubic meters of water. This significant capacity allows the dam to serve multiple purposes. It generates hydroelectric power, providing clean and renewable energy while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in irrigation, supplying water to nearby agricultural lands. This ensures that farmers can grow crops year-round, mitigating the effects of droughts and increasing agricultural productivity. The dam also supports local fisheries, providing a stable source of food and income for surrounding communities.

One of the most important functions of Khirithan Dam is flood prevention and mitigation during the rainy season. By effectively regulating water levels, the dam helps reduce the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and residential communities. This protection improves safety and stability for local populations, making it an essential infrastructure for disaster prevention and environmental balance.

The area around Khirithan Dam is renowned for its natural beauty. The peaceful environment, surrounded by lush green mountains and a vast, shimmering water surface, makes it a perfect destination for relaxation and nature appreciation. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere and picturesque landscapes throughout the year. Early mornings are especially magical, with a thin mist rising over the reservoir, creating a breathtaking and romantic view. However, there are currently no visitor facilities such as restaurants or accommodations near the dam. For this reason, visitors are encouraged to bring their own food, drinks, and essential supplies when visiting.

Traveling to Khirithan Dam is convenient and straightforward. From downtown Chanthaburi, take Highway No. 317 for approximately 20 kilometers, then turn right at the signposted intersection leading to the dam. Continue for about 14 kilometers, and you will reach the site. The route is well-paved and safe for private vehicles and motorcycles. Public transportation, including local minibuses and songthaews, is also available from Chanthaburi town.

Khirithan Dam is more than just an essential infrastructure for energy production and agriculture—it is also a hidden gem for eco-tourism. The site offers opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility of nature while learning about sustainable water and energy management. It is particularly appealing to nature photographers, as the surrounding scenery provides countless photo opportunities. The views of the expansive reservoir, surrounding mountains, and colorful skies during sunrise and sunset are especially stunning. During the cool season, the atmosphere becomes even more enchanting, with fog gently floating above the water, creating a romantic and peaceful setting ideal for picnics, leisurely walks, or simply enjoying the natural surroundings.

With its combination of environmental significance, cultural value, and natural beauty, Khirithan Dam stands as one of Chanthaburi’s must-visit destinations. Whether you are seeking a relaxing escape, outdoor exploration, or an educational experience, a visit to this remarkable dam promises unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of Thailand’s sustainable development and natural resources.
