Tham Dao Cave is one of the interesting natural attractions in Nong Phlap Subdistrict, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It is located in Moo 2, Ban Nong Phlap, within the same limestone mountain range as Tham Lap Lae and Tham Kai Lon. These caves form a group of natural limestone caves created by geological processes in the western part of Hua Hin District. The surrounding landscape consists of mountains, forests, and relatively well-preserved natural areas, making Tham Dao another destination that clearly reflects the natural beauty of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

Although Hua Hin is widely known as one of Thailand’s most famous seaside destinations, the outer parts of Hua Hin District are also filled with limestone mountains and abundant forests. Nong Phlap Subdistrict in particular contains several limestone hills, and these hills have given rise to many natural caves such as Tham Kai Lon, Tham Lap Lae, and Tham Dao, which have become important nature-based attractions for the local community.

Tham Dao is a limestone cave that is not very large, but it is beautiful because of its naturally formed stalactites and stalagmites. Inside the cave, rock formations have developed from deposits of calcium carbonate minerals carried by water seeping through layers of limestone. When these droplets fall to the cave floor, they gradually build up into stalagmites, while droplets clinging to the cave ceiling form stalactites. This natural process takes thousands of years to create the graceful formations seen inside the cave.

The name “Tham Dao,” or “Star Cave,” is often explained as coming from the way the cave’s stalactites and stalagmites reflect light. When light shines on the mineral-rich rock surfaces inside the cave, they glitter and sparkle like stars in the sky. This is said to be why local people named it Tham Dao, and the name has continued to be used ever since.

Inside Tham Dao, there are cave passages and chambers that can be explored on foot. In some sections, the ceiling is quite high and lined with hanging stalactites, while the floor is covered with steadily growing stalagmites. In certain places, stalactites and stalagmites have joined together to form natural stone pillars, one of the cave’s most striking features.

The atmosphere inside Tham Dao is quiet and cooler than outside because the cave structure helps maintain a steady temperature throughout the year. Visitors entering the cave can enjoy the calmness of nature as well as the sound of dripping water, which is part of the process that continues to shape the stalactites and stalagmites.

The area around Tham Dao remains rich in nature, with trees and forest covering the surrounding mountains. Traveling to the cave feels like entering true wilderness. Visitors can enjoy the atmosphere of forest, mountains, and an ecosystem that still preserves the character of rural Prachuap Khiri Khan.

The cave is also home to various living creatures such as bats, insects, and small animals that have adapted to survive in low-light conditions. These species are part of the cave ecosystem and play an important role in maintaining the natural balance of the area.

Because Tham Dao still retains a relatively undisturbed natural condition, visitors should help keep it clean and avoid damaging the cave environment. Touching stalactites and stalagmites can interrupt their natural formation process, so climbing on or handling the rock formations should be avoided.

Getting There To reach Tham Dao, travelers can start from Hua Hin town, take Phetkasem Road, then turn into Nong Phlap Subdistrict and continue on to Ban Nong Phlap, where the cave is located. Visitors can drive close to the cave by private car and then walk the remaining distance into the cave area.

The best time to visit Tham Dao is in the morning or late afternoon, when the weather is not too hot. Visitors should prepare a flashlight, suitable footwear for walking in natural terrain, and enough drinking water for safety during the cave exploration.

Tham Dao is therefore another appealing natural attraction in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province for travelers who want to experience the beauty of Hua Hin’s mountains and caves from a perspective different from the area’s more familiar seaside attractions.
