Bueng Kalo, also known by many as Bueng Thung Kalo, is a large and important water reservoir in Uttaradit Province. It is located in Pa Sao Subdistrict and extends partially into Khung Taphao Subdistrict, Mueang District, Uttaradit. It lies about 2 kilometers from Highway 11 and covers a vast area of approximately 7,500 rai (about 1,200 hectares), mostly consisting of natural wetlands. Bueng Kalo is thus a vital natural resource for agriculture and the environment in the region.

Geographically, Bueng Kalo is connected to the Nan River, a major river of Northern Thailand. During the rainy season, overflow from the Nan River floods into the Bueng Kalo area, making it a natural water storage site that helps mitigate floods in the region. It also stores water for agricultural use and consumption during the dry season. Due to its large area and rich ecosystem, Bueng Kalo has become a habitat for resident and migratory waterbirds of various species, including rare birds that attract birdwatchers from both Thailand and abroad, making it one of the key birdwatching sites in Northern Thailand.

There are mysterious and fascinating legends surrounding Bueng Kalo. Local villagers in the nearby communities, such as Thung Ban Khung Taphao and Huai Bong villages, believe that the area used to be an ancient city that eventually sank and became the present-day lake. Although there is no clear historical evidence, this legend has been passed down for generations. It is said that in the past, villagers found ancient brick ruins and structures underwater, but when they tried to investigate again, no remains could be found. However, in June 2010, when the water level in the lake receded and locals burned the dense reeds and rushes covering the area, many ancient ruins and artifacts were discovered, which might be evidence of the ancient city described in the legend.

Today, at the southern part of Bueng Kalo, a shrine called Chao Pho Kalo Shrine has been built and is highly revered by the local community. It is believed that Chao Pho Kalo is a guardian spirit who protects the area around the lake, serving as a spiritual center and symbol of faith for the surrounding community.

Given Bueng Kalo’s natural resources and strategic location near major transportation routes in Uttaradit Province, there have been development projects to transform the area into an educational, sports, and recreational park. Initiated by Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin Shinawatra in 2004, this project involved dredging canals and constructing roads connecting from Highway 11 to the lake. An OTOP (One Tambon One Product) center was also built to promote local products. Although the OTOP center is now abandoned, it reflects ongoing efforts to develop the area.

Currently, the area around Bueng Kalo has been allocated for important constructions such as Uttaradit Rajabhat University’s Thung Kalo Campus, which occupies more than 2,000 rai to support education and related activities. Additionally, there is the Boromarajonani Nursing College of Uttaradit Province and the Princess Srinagarindra Monument, a revered site for locals. The provincial Buddha Park (Buddhamonthon) is also located here, serving as a religious and cultural hub.

With its rich natural abundance and potential for development in education, religion, and governance, Bueng Kalo has become a strategic area that supports sustainable development for Uttaradit Province. It is also an attractive ecological tourism site and natural learning center for visitors and those interested in the history, nature, and culture of Northern Thailand.

If you are looking for a natural tourist destination that combines history and culture, Bueng Kalo in Uttaradit is a must-visit. With its peaceful atmosphere, biodiversity, and local legends full of charm and mystery, it holds a unique allure as part of the natural and cultural heritage of Northern Thailand.
