Shiva Shrine in Kamphaeng Phet Province is one of the most significant historical sites, reflecting the city’s past prosperity in history, art, and belief. It is located behind the Provincial Court within the old town area, which was once the center of local power and faith. The shrine’s architecture is distinctive, with a laterite rectangular base raised about 1.5 meters high. On this base stands a replica bronze statue of Lord Shiva, connected to a fascinating history.

Originally, the shrine housed the authentic bronze statue of Lord Shiva, a masterpiece of great artistic and cultural value. However, during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), a German individual stole the statue’s head and hands and attempted to ship them abroad to Bangkok. This incident marked a significant cultural loss. Thanks to the authority and prestige of King Chulalongkorn, the head and hands were successfully reclaimed and returned to Thailand.

To preserve this invaluable artifact, the original statue is now kept and displayed at the Kamphaeng Phet National Museum, allowing the public and visitors to admire its beauty and learn its history. Meanwhile, King Chulalongkorn graciously granted a replica statue of Lord Shiva to be exhibited in Germany, which today remains on display at a museum in Berlin.

The Shiva Shrine thus reflects both the influence of Brahman-Hindu beliefs and the historical cultural exchange between Thailand and foreign countries. It is a popular destination for tourists and history enthusiasts, thanks to its central location in Kamphaeng Phet city, convenient access, and serene atmosphere ideal for learning, research, and paying respects for blessings.

Visiting the Shiva Shrine is more than just sightseeing; it is an opportunity to explore the interconnection of art, belief, and history. The Shiva Shrine in Kamphaeng Phet stands as an essential cultural and historical landmark that should not be missed by anyone interested in Thailand’s heritage and historical tourism.
