Wat Sai Ngam In a small village located in Moo 5, Na Saeng Subdistrict, Lom Kao District, Phetchabun Province, lies an ancient temple that stands as a testament to history and artistry. This temple, known as “Wat Sai Ngam,” was once called “Wat Huai Makuea” by the villagers. Established over 260 years ago in 1763, the temple's original name was inspired by the area's natural surroundings, where streams and eggplant fields were abundant. As the community grew and evolved, the villagers collectively renamed the temple “Wat Sai Ngam,” reflecting the serenity and beauty of its surroundings.

One of the most remarkable features of Wat Sai Ngam is its ordination hall (sala kanparian), an old structure built approximately 50 years ago by skilled local artisans. The hall’s interior is adorned with murals depicting Buddhist teachings, daily life, and moral lessons. These murals are not only visually stunning but also serve as a source of spiritual guidance for visitors. The ordination hall stands as a vivid example of the unique local artistry found in the Lom Kao area.

Wat Sai Ngam holds great significance beyond its role as a religious site. It is the heart of the community, a gathering place for villagers during important occasions such as annual merit-making ceremonies, Dhamma teachings, and community activities that foster strong bonds among residents. The temple also serves as a venue for preserving cultural and religious traditions, including almsgiving, listening to sermons, and other Buddhist-related practices.

Additionally, the ordination hall acts as a space for learning about Buddhist principles and spiritual growth. The murals inside depict stories that promote a simple and virtuous way of life, emphasizing values that resonate deeply with the community. It is no wonder that Wat Sai Ngam remains a cherished and respected place for the villagers.

Wat Sai Ngam is not just an ancient temple showcasing the history and art of the region; it also reflects the lifestyle, beliefs, and close-knit relationships of the community. If you ever find yourself in Phetchabun Province, a visit to Wat Sai Ngam will allow you to experience the region’s cultural and artistic heritage while gaining insight into the simple, yet profound, way of life embraced by the local community.
