Wat Khao Khok Ko is located at No. 24, Ban Khao Khok Ko, Village No. 3, Thung Na Thai Subdistrict, Thap Than District, Uthai Thani Province. The temple is approximately 8 kilometers from Thap Than District. Visitors can take the Thap Than–Uthai Thani Highway and turn left at Ban Kamnan Prathuon, then continue for another 3 kilometers to reach the site. This temple holds significant historical and religious value for Uthai Thani Province, as its former abbot, Luang Pu Jiam, was appointed the first provincial ecclesiastical head of Uthai Thani.
Wat Khao Khok Ko houses numerous ancient structures and artifacts that are important for preservation. Among these are two historic ponds: the older pond is around 213 years old and measures 80 square wah, while the newer pond is approximately 75 years old and covers 100 square wah. The temple also features the largest Sema stone in Uthai Thani, attached to the ordination hall wall. It was constructed in the late Ayutthaya period and made of brass, measuring 1.18 meters in width, 3.10 meters in length, and 1.20 meters in height. The footprint area of the Buddha’s foot is decorated with a spiral pattern, created in 1927 by Mr. Tun Saksung and his descendants.
The wooden Dhamma preaching pulpit is made from carved teak with intricate gold leaf designs. There are twelve octagonal wooden pillars, each 50 centimeters in diameter. The temple hall is situated atop a hill, though the original structure was destroyed by fire. Inside the prayer hall, there are wooden murals depicting the entire 13 chapters of the Vessantara Jataka, while the assembly hall features paintings of the Ten Jataka Stories and the Buddha’s life. This makes the temple not only a spiritual center but also an important site for historical and cultural learning for both locals and visitors.
Wat Khao Khok Ko perfectly combines religious significance, historical value, and traditional art. The hilltop location provides a serene environment and scenic views, making it ideal for those seeking spiritual peace or an escape from daily life. Visitors should plan their trip in advance, as some parts of the route are narrow and uphill, to fully appreciate the temple’s spiritual, historical, and cultural treasures. As such, Wat Khao Khok Ko remains one of the most important temples in Uthai Thani Province that should not be missed.
