Wat Tham Chakraphong

Wat Tham Chakraphong, located in Moo 1, Ban Tha Thewawong Community, Chonburi Province, is a significant historical and religious attraction, especially for Koh Sichang, which is well-known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. This sacred site is closely tied to the royal history of His Royal Highness Prince Chakrabongse Bhuvanath, the son of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). The prince discovered this cave when he came to stay on Koh Sichang to recuperate from an illness. In remembrance of his visit, the cave was named “Tham Chakraphong.”

 

Tham Chakraphong is a small cave nestled amid Koh Sichang’s natural landscape. Inside, there is a reclining Buddha image, serving as a spiritual center for locals and visitors who come to pay respect for good fortune. The atmosphere within the cave is calm and peaceful, making it an ideal place for meditation and spiritual reflection. Above the cave, a pathway leads to the hilltop where a massive golden Buddha image in the meditation posture, known locally as “Phra Luang” (the Yellow Buddha), sits majestically. This statue can be seen clearly from a distance, even from boats out at sea, and has become a landmark of Koh Sichang. It is located on the western side of the island.

 

Traveling to Wat Tham Chakraphong is convenient. Once arriving at Koh Sichang, visitors can rent a motorcycle or take a local “skylab” vehicle to reach Ban Tha Thewawong Community. From there, a short walk leads to the cave and up to the hilltop where the giant Buddha resides. Along the way, travelers are treated to stunning sea views and the serene lifestyle of the local community, offering a glimpse into the island’s unique charm.

When visiting Wat Tham Chakraphong, it is advisable to wear suitable footwear for hiking and bring drinking water, as some parts of the trail are quite steep. However, the effort is well worth it once you reach the top, where spectacular views await.
