Wat Klang Dong is located in Klang Dong Subdistrict, Thung Saliam District, Sukhothai Province. This temple stands out for both its religious significance and its exquisite architecture. It serves as a spiritual center for local residents and attracts many visitors who come to pay their respects. The ubosot (ordination hall) features Northern Thai architectural elements similar to those found in Chiang Mai and Lampang, with multi-tiered roofs and intricately carved wooden details.
One of the most striking features is the five-tiered golden chedi located near the viharn, designed in Burmese style. Inside the chedi are precious items including glass, silver, and gold, reflecting the community’s historical devotion and cultural richness. The temple is conveniently located near the main road of Thung Saliam and is surrounded by mountains, creating a scenic backdrop. Visiting during the rice-growing season, one can see the ubosot and chedi set against lush green rice fields, presenting a uniquely picturesque view.
The temple also houses a pavilion dedicated to the revered Lanna saint, Kruba Sriwichai, with a life-size floating statue inside. This site is highly respected by the local community. The presence of Kruba Sriwichai at Wat Klang Dong is due to his close connection with his chief disciple, Phra Thong Suk Khunarak, a native of Klang Dong. Kruba Sriwichai entrusted his disciple to build the five-tiered golden stupa at the temple, which has since been restored to its former grandeur.
Wat Klang Dong is not only a place of worship but also a cultural and natural attraction. Its combination of mountain landscapes and verdant rice fields provides a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The detailed architecture and artistry of the ubosot and chedi offer insight into Northern Thai and Burmese art traditions. Moreover, the temple reflects the close relationship between religion and local life, with the community continuing to honor and preserve these traditions. Visiting Wat Klang Dong provides a holistic experience of faith, culture, and the serene beauty of Northern Thai nature and architecture.
