Dong Wiang Kaen Ancient City, located in Moo 3, Ban Muang, Muang Yai Subdistrict, Wiang Kaen District, Chiang Rai Province, is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Northern Thailand. It clearly reflects traces of ancient human settlements. The site is situated on elevated land approximately 30 – 35 meters high and lies only about 200 meters southeast of Wiang Kaen District center, making it a highly strategic location for establishing a city in the past.

The area of Dong Wiang Kaen Ancient City covers approximately 286 rai, 1 ngan, and 86.09 square wah, surrounded by a naturally rich forest ecosystem. It is home to local plant species, medicinal herbs, and diverse wildlife, making it outstanding both archaeologically and ecologically. Visitors can experience both natural beauty and historical significance in one place.

Archaeological studies reveal that this area was connected to ancient communities along the Mekong River basin, which was a major route for trade and cultural exchange in the past.
