Klong Cha Kra Reservoir is an important water resource located in Na Hu Kwang Subdistrict, Thap Sakae District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, Thailand. The reservoir is situated in Moo 10, Ban Thung Ta Kaeo and is considered one of the medium-scale irrigation projects that plays a vital role in supporting local agriculture, water management, and community livelihoods. At the same time, the surrounding landscape of mountains, forests, and wide open water has gradually transformed this reservoir into a peaceful natural attraction that reflects the quiet beauty of rural Prachuap Khiri Khan.

 

Although irrigation reservoirs are primarily developed to support water management and agriculture, many of them eventually become scenic natural locations where visitors can relax and appreciate the surrounding environment. Klong Cha Kra Reservoir is a good example of this transformation. Historically, Klong Cha Kra Reservoir began construction in 1994 and was completed in 1998, taking approximately five years to finish. The project was developed as a medium-scale irrigation reservoir to improve water storage capacity in the area. Before the reservoir existed, communities in Na Hu Kwang Subdistrict and nearby villages often experienced water shortages during dry seasons. The construction of the reservoir significantly improved water availability and helped stabilize agricultural production in the region.

 

Technically, the reservoir is an earth-fill dam designed as a Zone Type structure. This type of dam uses different material layers for specific purposes such as structural stability, seepage control, and resistance to water pressure. The dam crest is approximately 8 meters wide, 26 meters high, and 520 meters long. These engineering specifications allow the dam to store a large volume of water while maintaining structural safety and stability.

 

The reservoir has a storage capacity of approximately 10.40 million cubic meters of water. This capacity allows it to support several important functions including irrigation, water supply for communities, and water management during seasonal climate changes. One of the main objectives of the project is to support agricultural land covering approximately 4,000 rai in the surrounding area.

 

Besides agricultural benefits, Klong Cha Kra Reservoir also contributes to flood mitigation in downstream areas. During periods of heavy rainfall, the reservoir helps regulate water flow and reduce flood risks affecting nearby communities and farmland.

 

The reservoir is also known as a freshwater fish breeding area. The stable water environment supports various fish species and aquatic ecosystems which contribute to local biodiversity and small-scale fisheries within the community.

 

From a tourism perspective, the charm of Klong Cha Kra Reservoir lies in its peaceful and natural atmosphere. Unlike large commercial tourist destinations, the reservoir offers a quiet landscape where visitors can enjoy nature, take photographs, and relax while observing the surrounding mountains and forests.

 

The scenery around the reservoir changes with the seasons. During the rainy season the surrounding forests become lush and green while the reservoir reaches higher water levels. Traveling to Klong Cha Kra Reservoir is most convenient by private vehicle. Visitors can begin their journey on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) between Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon provinces. At approximately kilometer marker 363, make a U-turn in front of Thap Sakae Hospital. Then turn left onto the Phetkasem – Talat Mueang Rae road and continue for about 8.20 kilometers until reaching Ban Mueang Rae village. After that continue along the local road for approximately 9.50 kilometers until arriving at the reservoir area.
