Pa La-U Waterfall is one of the most famous natural attractions in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It is located in Huai Sat Yai Subdistrict, Hua Hin District, within Kaeng Krachan National Park, the largest national park in Thailand. The waterfall is about 65 kilometers from Hua Hin town and lies close to the Thailand–Myanmar border, allowing the surrounding area to retain a remarkably rich and well-preserved natural environment.

Many travelers know Hua Hin as a seaside town with beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, and well-known holiday destinations. Yet another side of Hua Hin is filled with fertile forest landscapes. Pa La-U Waterfall has therefore become an important destination for visitors who want to experience the beauty of forested mountains, streams, and one of the most well-preserved natural ecosystems in this region.

The Pa La-U forest area is located within Kaeng Krachan National Park, which covers a vast area across several provinces. It is also part of the “Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex,” which has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The importance of this area lies not only in its natural beauty, but also in its role in conserving ecosystems and Thailand’s biodiversity.

The Origin of the Name Pa La-U The word “La-U” comes from the Karen language and means “bamboo.” Since this forest area once had abundant bamboo, it came to be known as “Pa La-U,” or the bamboo forest. However, some people also call the area “Huai Pa Lao” because grayish flowering laeo grass covers wide parts of the area, giving the place two names that are both used in the local community.

Ban Pa La-U is a community where Karen culture remains clearly woven into daily life. On January 2 of every year, local residents hold the “Pa La-U Cultural Conservation Day,” which features interesting traditional performances such as fire baton spinning, folk performances, and a moon worship ceremony. This annual event reflects the identity of the community and helps preserve the traditional Karen culture of the area.

The Characteristics of Pa La-U Waterfall This waterfall is especially notable for being a large waterfall cascading down natural rock formations in a series of levels. It has a total of 11 tiers, each with its own distinctive character. Some tiers have broad pools suitable for swimming, while others feature rocky faces with water flowing beautifully over them, making the exploration of each level an enjoyable experience for visitors.

The lower tiers of the waterfall are the easiest for most visitors to access and often contain large pools where people can swim when the current is not too strong. The upper tiers, however, require walking along a nature trail, which allows visitors to experience the atmosphere of the tropical forest at close range.

The Nature of Pa La-U Forest The area around the waterfall is a highly fertile tropical rainforest. Large trees grow densely along the stream, and the area is home to a wide range of wildlife such as wild elephants, monkeys, barking deer, and many species of forest birds. Visitors who come during the rainy season often see large numbers of butterflies around the waterfall, creating one of the area’s most beautiful and distinctive scenes.

The sound of water flowing over rocks, the wind moving through the forest, and the cool air throughout the year make the atmosphere at Pa La-U Waterfall ideal for relaxation and nature walks. Many visitors come here simply to sit and unwind, listen to the sounds of nature, or photograph the beautiful forest scenery surrounding the waterfall.

Best Time to Visit In general, the best time to visit Pa La-U Waterfall is from November to April, when the water is flowing beautifully and travel conditions are relatively convenient. However, during the rainy season, the forest becomes especially lush and vibrant, although visitors need to be more careful about the route and weather conditions.

Traveling to Pa La-U Waterfall is most convenient by private car. From Bangkok, visitors can take Phetkasem Road toward Phetchaburi Province, pass Cha-am District, and continue into Hua Hin town. From there, Highway 3219 leads toward Huai Sat Yai Subdistrict, passing Nong Phlap Intersection and Ban Huai Phueng before continuing to Ban Fa Prathan and on to Pa La-U Reservoir.

Before reaching the waterfall, there is an entrance fee checkpoint operated by Kaeng Krachan National Park. From the checkpoint to the waterfall, the road is paved for about 2 kilometers and unpaved for another 2 kilometers. Once visitors arrive at the parking area, they can walk into the waterfall zone.

Although Pa La-U Waterfall is some distance from Hua Hin town, the trip is not overly difficult. Once visitors arrive, they are rewarded with a peaceful natural setting that feels very different from the coastal atmosphere of Hua Hin.

With its rich forest environment, beautiful cascading water, and diverse ecosystem, Pa La-U Waterfall is one of the most important natural attractions in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and an ideal destination for travelers who want to experience nature in its purest form.
