Wat Lam Phaya Floating Market, Nakhon Pathom is a historic floating market located in front of Wat Lam Phaya along the Nakhon Chai Si River (Tha Chin River) in Lam Phaya Subdistrict, Bang Len District, Nakhon Pathom Province. This market preserves the authentic charm of traditional Thai riverside life, blending commerce, culture, and community in a setting that has existed for over a century.

The name “Lam Phaya” originally referred to a village during the time when the area was part of Bang Pla District in Nakhon Chai Si Monthon. Historical records trace back to the reign of King Rama V, when canals were excavated behind the present market area to facilitate land settlement and agricultural expansion. This development laid the foundation for a thriving riverside community.

The community of Lam Phaya was shaped by two main cultural groups. The first group consisted of Mon settlers who migrated from Sam Khok during the late reign of King Rama III, establishing agricultural communities on the western side of the river. The second group was Chinese settlers who lived on the eastern side and engaged in trade. The coexistence of these two cultures created a vibrant riverside trading community, eventually giving rise to the floating market around the year 1857.

The market has existed for more than 100 years and has been carefully restored and developed into a peaceful and well-maintained cultural attraction. Within Wat Lam Phaya stands the revered Luang Pho Mongkol Malanimit, a Mara-Vijaya posture Buddha image made from laterite, coated with plaster and covered in gold leaf. It is a significant spiritual landmark, and an annual temple fair is held from the waning 14th day of the 4th lunar month to the waxing 1st day of the 5th lunar month, lasting 3 days.

The floating market was initiated by the Lam Phaya Subdistrict Cultural Council in collaboration with Wat Lam Phaya. Its primary objective is to support the local economy while preserving traditional ways of life. Today, it serves as a central hub for agricultural products, including fresh vegetables, fruits, handicrafts, woven fabrics, naturally dyed textiles, and a wide range of affordable local foods.

Food is one of the market’s biggest attractions. Visitors can enjoy traditional Thai dishes such as boat noodles, Thai desserts, Chinese pastries, steamed curry (hor mok), and many other local delicacies. Fresh produce directly from local farms ensures high quality and authentic flavors.

In front of the temple is a natural fish sanctuary filled with various species such as striped catfish, silver barb, giant gourami, and black ear catfish. Feeding the fish is a popular activity, especially among families and children.

Another highlight is the boat tours along the Tha Chin River. Visitors can choose from several types of boats. Traditional rowing boats offer a 30-minute trip to the sacred Mae Tubtim Shrine. Motorized boats provide round trips to Wat Suk Watthanaram, while larger boats travel to Wat Bang Phra (Luang Pho Pern Temple), taking approximately 2.5 hours. These experiences allow visitors to explore the riverside lifestyle from a unique perspective.

The overall atmosphere of Wat Lam Phaya Floating Market is calm, simple, and authentic. It is not overly commercialized, making it ideal for travelers seeking a peaceful escape from the city. Visitors can stroll, shop, interact with locals, and enjoy nature along the river.
