Ubon Ratchathani University It is a state higher education institution. The first teaching was opened in the academic year 1988 under the name "Ubon Ratchathani College" under Khon Kaen University. by offering teaching in the fields of Agriculture and Engineering.

Later in the year 1990, the government of General Chatichai Choonhawan passed a resolution to upgrade Ubon Ratchathani College to “Ubon Ratchathani University” which is the 19th state university under the Ministry of University Affairs. According to the Ubon Ratchathani University Act, B.E. 2533, published in the Government Gazette on 29 July 1990, later the Ubon Ratchathani University Council Associate Professor Somchit Yodseranee was the first president of the university.

The names of Ubon Ratchathani University Presidents from the first to the present are as follows: 1. Associate Professor Somchit Yodseranee held the position of Rector since 1991 – 1998 2. Professor Paitoon Ingkasuwan has been in the position of President since 1991 1999 - 2000.
