Wat Sak Yai Wat Chalo, Bang Kruai, Nonthaburi. Wat Sak Yai is an old temple that was established by Taksin the Great, King of Thonburi. He had offered his own money along with money from ancestors of the local people to build the temple in 1774.

The temple’s slogan is “Holy Buddha Image, Valuable Buddhist Paintings, Interesting Fish Park, Orchard Tour and Beautiful Flowers” which can summarize what are interesting things that tourists can expect from the temple.

Firstly, the temple is famous for its Buddha image called, “Laung Pho Sukhothai,” which is a very beautiful image. It is assumed that the image was built around 1357-1457, near the end of King Maha Dhamma Raja’s reign.

It has exquisite and symmetrical feature meaning its face is similar to a face of a lady. It is in a cross-legged sitting, Subduing Mara posture.

Its body is used to be covered with cement because it is assumed that when the Burmese army attacked Ayutthaya, local people along with the monks had covered the image with cement so that the Burmese would think that it was a cement image. Later, the cement cracked showing the gold inside.

Therefore, people cracked off its covering and covered the body again with gold. Buddhists would annually come to pay respect to the image, water it and gild it.

Inside the Main Hall is where exhibits Laung Pho Yai which is an image built in the same time as the temple. There are also paintings about Buddha’s life and Buddha opening the three worlds, and Thailand’s important Buddha’s relics exhibiting in the hall.

Regarding the Fish Park, it is a freshwater fish park located near the main hall of the temple. There are many ponds with big fish that weigh over 10 to 20 kilograms. The temple provides fish feed for sale as well. Apart from fish, the temple also has many turtles and soft-shelled turtles.

Orchard and flowers tours are organized at the back of the temple which is a place that local people have planted these trees and flowers.

Variety of fruits includes oranges, pomelos, jackfruits, mangos, coconuts and rose apples that are in orchard along with the beautiful flowers which tourists can pick or buy to bring back home.
